JAPAN · TEMPORARY VISITOR VISA

Your Japan trip starts with knowing your route.

Whether you need a visa for Japan depends entirely on your passport, not on where you live and getting that wrong is the single most common mistake we see. We confirm your route first, then handle the application, the appointment where one’s needed, and the paperwork behind it, start to finish.

Government fees follow a reciprocity principle and vary sharply by nationality from roughly $5 to $195 depending on your passport and entry type and are paid separately at the visa centre.

Not every nationality needs one

Know your route before you book flights.

Japan’s visa rules run on your passport, not your address. British, EU, US, Canadian and South African citizens can currently visit visa-free for up to 90 days but a great many other nationalities living in the UK need a full visa in advance, and the fee and process differ sharply between them. Getting this wrong in either direction is expensive: paying for a visa you don’t need, or discovering at check-in that you did.

Check first, book second

We check your passport against the current exemption list at the free consultation stage, before any fee changes hands. If you’re visa-free, we tell you and you keep the $129–$399 in your pocket.

UK residence isn’t the test

Living in the UK, holding a UK visa or even holding indefinite leave to remain doesn’t change your Japan visa requirement that follows your passport. Your UK status is still part of the application if you do need a visa, evidencing your lawful basis for applying from London rather than your home country.

Fees vary a great deal by nationality

Japan’s visa fee follows a reciprocity principle, so two applicants travelling on the same flight can pay very different government fees depending on their passport. We confirm the exact current figure for you rather than quoting a single number that’s wrong for most readers.

Visa-exemption rules and fee reciprocity change; we confirm the current position for your passport before you pay us anything.

March–May

Spring

Cherry blossom season, and Japan’s single most popular window to visit. Sakura typically peaks in Tokyo and Kyoto through late March and early April, days are mild, and the whole country feels dressed up for it. Book flights and hotels months ahead this is also when domestic travel peaks.

Festivals & heat
June–August

Summer

Hot and humid nationwide, with a rainy season through June into early July. What it buys you is festival season fireworks displays and matsuri fill the calendar and the clearest window for the northern island of Hokkaido, which stays cooler than the rest of the country.

Sweet spot
September–November

Autumn

Many travellers’ favourite alongside spring. Autumn foliage peaks through Kyoto and the northern regions in November, the summer humidity has broken, and the crowds thin out compared to cherry blossom season. Comfortable temperatures for walking cities and temple grounds alike.

Ski & quiet cities
December–February

Winter

Cold and often snowy in the north and along the Sea of Japan coast exactly the conditions that make Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps a serious ski destination. Tokyo and Kyoto stay largely dry and crisp rather than bitter, and this is the quietest, best-value season to see the major cities without the crowds.

Cherry blossom season (late March–early April) and autumn foliage (November) are Japan’s two busiest windows book flights, hotels and your appointment well ahead if you’re travelling in either. Apply at least 3–4 weeks before your intended travel date: processing takes at least 5 working days once accepted, but allow time for document preparation and appointment availability.

Questions about Japan

Things people always ask.

Do I need a visa to visit Japan?

It depends entirely on your passport. British, EU, US, Canadian and South African citizens can currently travel to Japan visa-free for stays of up to 90 days. Several other nationalities do need a visa in advance, including Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Nigerian, Chinese, Sri Lankan, Nepalese and Vietnamese passport holders and that applies regardless of how long you’ve lived in Canada. We check your passport against the current list before anything else.

I live in the UK but I’m not a British citizen which rules apply to me?

The visa requirement follows your passport, not your UK residence. If your nationality needs a visa for Japan, your UK residence permit or eVisa doesn’t change that but it is part of the application, since it evidences your lawful basis for applying from Canada rather than your home country.

How long does a Japan visa take to process?

Typical processing is at least 5 working days once a complete application has been accepted, though additional checks can extend this. Our own side takes 5–10 working days to have your form, itinerary and full document pack accurate and submission-ready.

Where can I apply for a Japan visa in Canada?

At the consular section or an authorised visa application centre currently serving London, Edinburgh and Manchester. We book the appointment that suits you and confirm exactly what to bring.

What does a Japan visa cost?

Government fees follow a reciprocity principle and vary sharply by nationality for example, Indian passport holders currently pay around $5 for either a single or multiple-entry visa, while several other nationalities pay roughly $99 for single entry and $195 for multiple entry. Our service fee is fixed at $129, paid separately from the government fee.

Can my family apply together?

Yes family and group applications are handled together, with a single case manager, a coordinated appointment and one consolidated fee.

What happens if my application is incomplete or incorrect?

Incomplete applications and inconsistent supporting documents are a leading cause of delay. This is exactly what our document review and preparation service is designed to prevent every figure and date checked against the documents behind it before submission.
